Recent Guidance Regarding Use of Masks
As many of you are aware, Governor Baker and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) released guidance yesterday that can allow schools to relax rules around shared school materials as well as to relax some of the masking requirements in outside learning environments and at recess. This guidance is a positive sign that vaccinations, social distancing, and appropriate masking are moving us in the right direction. We are also reviewing the use of masks at prom and graduation in accordance with the guidance. For now, the Supplemental Guidance for School Groups for School Year 2020 – 2021 still applies. In addition, the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) and the DESE approved the removal of masks / face coverings during practices and contests for all outdoor sports and for indoor sports that are deemed “low risk” in the guidance. You may view the updated Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) guidelines HERE.
Our district leadership team is now in the process of working with town health officials and Cohasset Public Schools staff to review the guidance and to ensure we are able to implement it safely. As the Cohasset School Committee developed a mask policy, we will be discussing this new guidance as it relates to the mask policy at tomorrow evening’s School Committee Meeting, which takes place at 6:00PM. Once we are able to thoughtfully process all of this guidance with the appropriate parties, we will communicate any changes to the school community. Until that time, we are maintaining our current protocols. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we continue to ensure the safest possible learning environment for your children. Here is the DESE Frequently Asked Question Document, which highlights the change in guidance that impact schools.
