Digital Learning
What Students Learn
Cohasset students develop digital literacy and citizenship skills across all four schools, from foundational habits in the early grades through critical thinking and ethical participation in high school. Our elementary schools follow a structured digital literacy curriculum. At the middle and high school levels, technology integration and digital citizenship are supported by the DLI team across subjects.
The digital literacy curriculum is aligned with the Massachusetts Digital Literacy and Computer Science Standards (DLCS), the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), and Common Core standards in relation to technology.
K–12 Digital Literacy Curriculum
Elementary (K–5)
Students in kindergarten through fifth grade have computer class once a week for a 45-minute period. The technology program includes a keyboarding component that is consistently reinforced from kindergarten through 5th grade. Computer basics and skills are practiced and applied through units, lessons, presentations and projects. These skills include word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, internet research, copyright, digital art, internet safety, digital citizenship, computer coding and online testing skills. Cohasset is a Google Workspace for Education user.
Google tools such as Docs, Slides, Sheets, Drawing, Maps and Google Classroom are introduced throughout grades K-5. Students learn to touch-type and practice correct finger-key connections each week through a series of lessons in an online program called Keyboarding without Tears.
Middle School (6–8)
At the middle school level, technology is integrated into subject-area teaching across disciplines. The District supports teachers in embedding digital skills into existing lessons and units rather than through a standalone curriculum.
- Research and source evaluation across subjects
- Digital communication and collaboration tools
- Media literacy and understanding algorithms
- Digital citizenship woven into advisory and core classes
High School (9–12)
At the high school level, technology skills are developed through subject-area coursework and supported by the District. Students engage with digital tools for research, creation, and communication across all disciplines.
- Research, data analysis, and verification skills
- Digital design and multimedia across subjects
- Responsible use of AI tools in academic work
- College and career digital readiness
Technology Integration
The Cohasset Public Schools has adopted the SAMR model for technology integration. Technologies are selected and utilized in the classroom to help students learn:
- Higher order thinking and digital literacies (analyzing, evaluating & creating)
- Common core standards (communication, collaboration, creation, critical thinking, & computational thinking)
- Content knowledge (ELA, Math, etc.)
Digital Citizenship
Digital citizenship is taught at every grade level across all four schools — not as a separate class but woven into existing teaching. Students learn to participate online with empathy, ethics, and good judgment. Topics build progressively from foundational safety habits in the early grades to ethical reasoning and civic participation by high school.
Elementary (K–5)
Online safety, what to share and not share, kindness in digital spaces, healthy device habits, understanding personal information and passwords.
Middle School (6–8)
Digital footprint, cyberbullying prevention and response, privacy and how companies use data, online relationships, introduction to AI and how to evaluate it critically.
High School (9–12)
Synthetic media and verification, digital identity and reputation, copyright and academic integrity, AI ethics and bias, civic participation and constructive online discourse.
